Come celebrate with us the release of Arion Press’s latest publication, Book II of The Odes of Horace featuring twenty-one photographs by Dennis Letbetter. Michael Taylor, translator, will read from his new verse translations and discuss Horace’s political and social milieu. Dennis Letbetter, photographer, will also be in attendance. Both the limited and deluxe editions of the book will be on display together with a copy of the hand-printed 16 x 20 inch gelatin silver photographic print that accompanies the thirty deluxe copies.
Horace’s Odes represent the poet at the height of his art. Frequently translated, often weakened, the Odes have challenged every translator who sought to bridge the distance between the originals and a language very different from anything the poet spoke. In these translations, Horace speaks to us with freshness and an astonishing immediacy, more than two thousand years after the Odes were composed.
Michael Taylor will read his translations at 6:30pm. Refreshments and drinks will be provided. RSVP here.
