“Sampler” refers both to the selection of poetry and to the 18th and 19th century embroidery that inspired Kiki Smith’s imagery. The artist’s marks imitate the stitchery of samplers with short, straight, and slightly curved strokes. Her subtle patterns of cross-stitches and hatchings become recognizable figures or mysterious forms related to the imagery in Dickinson’s poems. Each page of poetry features a print.
